WIZARD WORDS
A newsletter from Washington Elementary and Washington PTA

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Families,
Tomorrow is election day!
All Wake County schools will have a two-hour delay on November 8th. Washington’s opening bell will be at 10:50 a.m. and the late bell will be at 11:20 a.m. We will dismiss, as normal, at 3:50 p.m. (Families who are enrolled in the Before Care program may arrive at their normal time -- 7:00 a.m.) Breakfast will not be served to students during the normal arrival time as the normal lunch schedule will be in place with the first group of students going to eat at 11:20 a.m.
Previously, Washington GT was a polling site. This location has now been moved to the Walnut Terrace Apartment community center so that school functions will not be impacted.

VOTE TOMORROW!
Every day, throughout this nation and overseas, PTA members are hard at work, striving to better the lives of all children. Collectively, our non-partisan voices have made a positive impact nationwide. Just as we speak up for children through our advocacy work, we also need to exercise the privilege given to every U.S. citizen—the right to vote. Not only should we vote, we need to motivate the people in our schools and communities to vote.
Elections can have consequences to our mission and we need to make sure our elected officials will work to serve our children well. Voter turnout in the United States has steadily declined. A Pew Research Center study shows that in 2012 the U.S. trailed most developed countries in voter turnout, coming in at number 27 with a 53.6% voter turnout. Often people do not vote because of time constraints, lack of information about the process or because they think that their vote will not matter. Do you feel your vote does not make a difference? Elections have been won by just one vote—and in the not-too-distant past, 537 votes made the difference in a presidential election! If we as PTA members do not speak up for all children, who will?
Make a difference in the lives of children. VOTE on Nov. 8 and encourage all child advocates to cast their ballots. As you head to the polls, remember these wise words from the Dalai Lama, “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.”
Need to know your voting location? Go here to find out!

THE "BOOKANEER" BOOK FAIR IS COMING!
Join us for Washington's Arts & Letters Night on Thursday, November 17th! This is our school’s annual celebration of the vibrant art community at Washington, and this year’s theme is Pirates! The event is held in conjunction with the week-long book fair at school, so we will also be honoring reading and literacy. There will be many fun activities starting with guest artists from Bright Star Theater performing Aesop’s Fables. Following the show, there will be something for everyone with activities celebrating the arts, as well as games and crafts, and the book fair will be open. Food will be available for purchase from Barone Meatballs. More details to follow in Monday folders.
Please plan to come join the fun!

CLASS DOJO STORE FOR STUDENTS
Hello WES Families!
The PBIS team and staff are in the process of designing a ClassDojo store for students. This will allow them the opportunity to earn incentives for displaying positive behaviors and growth. At the Dojo store, students will not need real money to buy items. The store will be connected to their Dojo information instead. Since the store will not be making a profit, we will need help from you with making it sustainable. If you are able, please donate new or gently used novelty items, toys, snacks, school supplies, etc. We are excited about this opportunity because students will be recognized for making positive choices and no one will be excluded. This aligns with our school improvement focus on creating a safe and inclusive environment. Thank you!
