Welcome to the Special Education and Inclusion Committee Page!
“Know me for my abilities, not my disability.” – Robert M. Hansel
Teachers and specialists in the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) work with over 20,000 students with disabilities every day in order to provide appropriate educational opportunities and support student learning. Students receive special education support services through either an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or a 504 Plan and most students who receive special education services are in regular education classrooms.
The Wake County Special Education and Inclusion Committee (Wake SEIC), which is part of the Wake County PTA Council, is made up of parent volunteers and leaders who have set forth the following mission:
“To create a network of parents, educators, and administrators who will work cooperatively and constructively to meet the needs of all students receiving special education services in the most integrated environment, with appropriate supports in place, to ensure that the students will learn and be valued members of their school community.”
The Wake SEIC requests that each school in WCPSS have a liaison in every PTA to help support communication between parents, school staff, and the PTA in order to facilitate the inclusion of all students within PTA programming. The SEIC Liaison’s role is
(1) To serve as a link to resources for parents and educators on special education and related community services.
(2) To support Washington’s PTA by offering ideas for accommodations to PTA programs in order to facilitate the inclusion of all students within the Washington community.
(3) The SEIC Liaison does not give advice on individual issues or attend IEP meetings.
Please feel free to contact our PTA President, Jessica Jeffries (jjeffries1022@gmail.com) with any questions or suggestions about how to make our PTA events at Washington more accessible to your family.
