Shining Star Fundraiser
GOAL MET!!!!!!!!!!!
September 26 - November 4
THANK YOU to everyone who gave one penny up to much more. Every penny counted and not only have we met our our goal, but we have EXCEEDED IT!!! We are truly humbled by this and look forward to a great year for Washington! The Shining Star Fundraiser is our PTA’s most important fundraiser of the year! We are excited about the programs and events planned for the 2022-2023 school year. Your donations will allow those programs and events to happen. You give. PTA plans. Students Shine! Why does WES PTA fundraise? Quite simply, we need funds for our programs, events, and other resources for our children and staff. Because of donors' kindness and generosity, we can provide many activities that enrich our education at Washington. This year, our "big" focus will be "Outdoor Experiences," such as picnic tables, sun shades, and exercise equipment. In previous years, we were able to use Shining Star funds for "big" technology items such as 70" monitors, as well as install refillable water stations for every grade. In addition, Shining Star funds also pays for multi-cultural events, math and science night, the spelling bee, teacher appreciation week, artist / writer in residencies, and so much more! As a member of the National PTA, Washington Elementary PTA’s mission is to make every student’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children. WES PTA has translated this mission into four core themes:
WES PTA creates programs and events based in these four core themes. These programs and events can only be accomplished through dedicated volunteers and fundraising. |

Why is the Shining Star Fundraiser so important?
Shining Star Fundraiser is the primary fundraiser for WES PTA. 100% of your donation goes directly to the PTA which allows WES families to see the greatest impact. WES PTA chose a direct donation fundraiser because of its benefits over fundraisers that yield a low return or require students to sell products.
Donations and matching employer donations accounted for approximately 80% of PTA’s funds in recent years. All other forms of PTA fundraising (i.e. Wizard Wear, Scholastic book fair, passive fundraising, grants) accounted for 20%. The 2022-23 Shining Star Fundraiser will run for 6 weeks from September 26th to November 4th. The goal is $23,000 in donations and $3,000 in employer matching donations.
Many companies such as IBM, Red Hat, and others will match donations. Check with your organization to see if they will match for Washington!

Enriching Student Experiences
Our PTA supports activities that enhance our students’ school experience and spur their interest in learning. These include Spelling Bee, Science Fair, Reflections Art Competition, and Reading Incentive Programs. We also support the 5th Grade Play and Field Day.
Teacher Empowerment & Support
Our PTA believes that students shine when teachers shine. We strive to empower teachers to make independent and creative choices for their students and classrooms. The WES PTA has two programs specifically designed for teachers, Teacher Start-Up Funds and Teacher Grants. Teacher Start-Up Funds are provided to each WES teachers at the beginning of the school year to make purchases that will enrich their classroom. Teacher Grants allow teachers to apply for funds for innovative teaching resources or training development.
Building the WES Community
Our PTA wants all parents to feel welcome and comfortable at Washington Elementary. When parents, teachers, staff and students work together, great things can happen. The PTA’s Communication Program keeps communication lines open with parents through newsletters, Facebook, the PTA website (wizardpta.org), and PTA meetings. Families can stay connected through the PTA Directory on MemberHub. Evening events are a big part of community building. Last year, there were five PTA sponsored evening events, Fall Family Picnic, Arts & Letters Night, Math & Science Night, Cultural Celebration Night and Spring Celebration. These events brought together WES families, teachers and staff for fun and learning.
Advocacy & Outreach
Our PTA serves to educate parents and students about issues impacting our school community. We strive to stay abreast of legislative issues that impact our students’ education and school experience. The PTA is active in attending WCPSS Board Advisory Committee meetings for District 5. Our PTA leadership team receives annual training to stay informed about issues affecting Wake County schools. We also support PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) trait development through outreach initiatives such as the coat drive for kindness and food drive for cooperation.
