WIZARD WORDS

A newsletter from Washington Elementary and Washington PTA

February 6th, 2018

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Washington Families,

For important WES attendance guidelines and educational absences information, check out this attendance policies link, which is also listed under the parents' link on our school website. It is important for families to know when scheduling trips during the school year that 10 or more consecutive absences can result in being unenrolled from Washington and returning to your base school. Please carefully consider these guidelines before scheduling trips.

Interested in Washington’s Chess Club run by Triangle Chess? The club meets on Thursdays in the media center on the following dates: March 15, 22 (no meeting 3/29 and 4/5 for spring break) 4/12, 4/19, 4/26, 5/3, 5/10, 5/17, and 5/24 from 3:50-5:10 p.m. The cost is $110. If you are interested in a possible scholarship contact me at bgrant@wcpss.net. Families can register online by going to http://trianglechess.com/school-programs/  and click on “join a team."

~Mr. Grant

MULTI-CULTURAL NIGHT

SHARE YOUR CULTURE WITH WASHINGTON!

We are fortunate that our Washington Family is so culturally diverse! For several years, the PTA and Washington families have organized a cultural night to highlight different groups represented at our school. We have learned about India by celebrating Holi, we experienced the vibrant music, food, and art of Latin America, and we celebrated the vast cultural and historical contributions of African Americans. This year, we want to host a Multi-cultural Fair in April to celebrate everyone! If your family has a particular cultural background, we hope you will teach us by bringing traditional dress, art, music, food to taste, etc. More information on how you can participate is coming soon, but we need your help to plan this event!

THE PTA IS LOOKING FOR INTERESTED PARENTS TO HELP COORDINATE THIS EVENT IN APRIL. Please contact Amy Jones at docteachjones@me.com if you are interested, and/or click HERE to join the Cultural Night Hub in MemberHub!

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

PTA is looking for volunteers to collect donations for Jump Rope for Heart on Friday, February 16th and Friday, February 23rd. We need two parent volunteers to stand at the front office as students turn in cash donations these two mornings at drop-off. Teachers cannot collect this money so we need parent help! Please email Coach K. at skichefski@wcpss.net or emilywking@gmail.com to volunteer. Learn more about Jump Rope for Heart here: http://american.heart.org/jump-hoops/

YEARBOOK

Yearbooks are now on sale for $21 through February 16th. After that date the price increases to $25 through March 16th. Please purchase a yearbook(s) for your student(s) to have many memories from WES! Order forms were sent home last Tuesday or you can order online here: www.strawbridge.net
and use SCHOOL CODE: 110963. Please make checks payable to STRAWBRIDGE and not WES.

ANNOUNCING THE 2018 WAKE UP AND READ BOOK DRIVE!

From January 20th - March 3rd, WAKE Up and Read will collect new and gently-used books for children ages birth - 12. Many Wake County children have no books in their home and arrive for kindergarten without the knowledge and experiences they need to excel. Washington families can make a difference in our community just by donating books! Please clear your cluttered shelves of books your kids have outgrown, or bring in favorites of your own, so that we can help Wake County children grow up loving books.

Look for the book collection bins at the Front Office – and please help us fill them!

To find out more, contact Kara Goeres at kara.goeres@gmail.com. To learn more about WAKE Up and Read, visit www.wakeupandread.org, or check out Facebook.
