WIZARD WORDSA newsletter from Washington Elementary and Washington PTANovember 21, 2016 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Families, As part of a recent county inspection, the Wake County Health Department found evidence of lead paint in several areas of our school. It is one of the things inspectors look for in buildings constructed before 1978 that serve young children. The Health Department notified the WCPSS Maintenance and Operations Department about the issue. WCPSS Maintenance and Operations is working to address the issue in the coming weeks by painting areas that have lead paint. Parents of children younger than six will receive a letter from the Health Department in October with additional information. We are glad the Health Department identified this issue that WCPSS Maintenance can fix for us as we continue to keep our school a safe place for our students and staff. Painting will take place in impacted areas, which are primarily the school stairwells, sections of window frames in classrooms, and some painted surfaces in the media center. If you have questions please feel free to contact me. Thanks for your continued support of our school! ~Mr. Grant Upcoming Events Wednesday, November 23: TEACHER WORKDAY Thursday-Friday, November 24-25: THANKSGIVING BREAK Friday, December 2: Early Release at 1:20 p.m. Monday-Tuesday, December 6-7: Holiday Magic gift turn-in at carpool and walk-up
Message from the PTA President November is a time when we reflect our gratitude for the many things we are thankful for in our lives. As I meet new families who are contemplating applying to our magnet school, I tell them that I am so grateful that my children have the privilege to be a part of the Washington GT family. Our school's leadership, educators, parents, and students make me believe that we have the best school in the nation. We have so much love in our school and every single one of is a shining star who wants the absolute best for our children. I want to thank you for your time and commitment to our PTA. On October 31, we wrapped up our 2016 Shining Star Fundraiser with 100 percent of our fundraising goal met. We raised $21,100! Thanks to your generosity, we will be able to continue to support our students and educators successfully this year. I also want to thank our many PTA volunteers who have given so much of their time to make sure grants are funded, events take place seamlessly, and for all the work these volunteers do behind the scenes to make it all look so flawless and easy. Thank you! If you have not yet joined the Washington GT Magnet Elementary PTA, we invite you to do so online at our website: wizardpta.org or print a form and submit it to your child's teacher. Be a part of the one voice that always speaks on behalf of all students. I am pleased to announce that we received the coveted Blue Key Award for our successful PTA Membership drive this year. However, I know we can do even better than that! We are only 25 members away from the highest honor: The Gold Key Award. Let's hit that goal in January! We have much to be proud of here at WES. As your elected President, I thank you for your support! Best wishes, Leigh Hines Washington GT Magnet PTA President, 2016-2017

CLASS DOJO STORE FOR STUDENTS Hello WES Families! The PBIS team and staff are in the process of designing a ClassDojo store for students. This will allow them the opportunity to earn incentives for displaying positive behaviors and growth. At the Dojo store, students will not need real money to buy items. The store will be connected to their Dojo information instead. Since the store will not be making a profit, we will need help from you with making it sustainable. If you are able, please donate new or gently used novelty items, toys, snacks, school supplies, etc. We are excited about this opportunity because students will be recognized for making positive choices and no one will be excluded. This aligns with our school improvement focus on creating a safe and inclusive environment. Thank you! Important Links:

¡Muchas gracias! VOTE TOMORROW! Every day, throughout this nation and overseas, PTA members are hard at work, striving to better the lives of all children. Collectively, our non-partisan voices have made a positive impact nationwide. Just as we speak up for children through our advocacy work, we also need to exercise the privilege given to every U.S. citizen—the right to vote. Not only should we vote, we need to motivate the people in our schools and communities to vote. Elections can have consequences to our mission and we need to make sure our elected officials will work to serve our children well. Voter turnout in the United States has steadily declined. A Pew Research Center study shows that in 2012 the U.S. trailed most developed countries in voter turnout, coming in at number 27 with a 53.6% voter turnout. Often people do not vote because of time constraints, lack of information about the process or because they think that their vote will not matter. Do you feel your vote does not make a difference? Elections have been won by just one vote—and in the not-too-distant past, 537 votes made the difference in a presidential election! If we as PTA members do not speak up for all children, who will? Make a difference in the lives of children. VOTE on Nov. 8 and encourage all child advocates to cast their ballots. As you head to the polls, remember these wise words from the Dalai Lama, “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.” Need to know your voting location? Go here to find out! (Adopted from onevoice.pta.org)
