WIZARD WORDSA newsletter from Washington Elementary and Washington PTAOctober 16th, 2017
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Washington Families, At Washington GT, we have one of the most diverse student/family populations in Wake County. Our diversity is one of our greatest assets. Learning from, understanding, and appreciating people from different backgrounds, races, family structures, and religions, among others, serves to build a community where all families and students feel valued and can thrive. Our Fall Picnic is this Thursday from 5:00-7:00pm and is a great opportunity to come together as a Washington GT Family. I invite you to engage in a get to know you activity that I will be leading during our Fall Picnic. Families will be given a slip of colored paper during the Fall Picnic. When announced, you will find another person/family you may not know well, or at all, with a slip of paper the same color as yours. You will take 6 minutes to discuss any of the questions below you choose. When the signal is given, you will find another family with the same colored slip of paper and repeat. I hope you will actively join me in taking the opportunity to learn from, engage, laugh, and talk with each other. Building deeper connections makes for a stronger and caring school family.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Julie von Haefen
Special thanks to Julie von Haefen and her Saturday crew for cleaning up our courtyard!
You may know Julie von Haefen as a Washington parent but she is also one of the most dedicated PTA volunteers we have ever known! Julie served as Washington GT Elementary PTA President for two years and continues to serve on our PTA Executive Board as an At-Large Member. While PTA President, she won a grant to fund the first cultural night "Holi Festival." She is a dedicated steward of the grounds at Washington and has been an integral part in the creation and maintenance of the Fossil Pit on the playground as well as the Courtyard. But that's not all....Julie is also serving as the Wake County PTA Council President this school year and she is also on the North Carolina PTA Board of Directors serving as the Advocacy Committee Chair. We are truly blessed to have Julie serve beside us as she is always inspiring us to carry out PTA's mission: "to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children."
Julie, we thank you!
