WIZARD WORDSA newsletter from Washington Elementary and Washington PTAFebruary 26th, 2018
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Washington Families, The month of March is a great opportunity to see our Wizards' talents shine. On March 3rd, Mr. Bastin, our AIG teacher, and Ms. Eacret, our dance teacher, will be taking students to the Odyssey of the Mind (OM) competition at Wake Tech. OM teaches students to be imaginative problem solvers. On March 7th, students from our school production, Giants in the Sky, will be performing a musical selection from their musical in front of several thousand people at Memorial Auditorium during the Pieces of Gold program. Our students were selected from among many schools who hoped to perform. On March 24th, Mrs. Pride and Mrs. Parker, 3rd grade teachers, will be bringing their Science Olympiad teams to compete against students from across the district. Students have been working together in their elective to prepare for the competition where they will compete in events in the fields of earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. In all of these electives students have been working together over two quarters with dedicated staff while nurturing their gifts and talents and putting the 4C’s into action---critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity. I hope you come out to see them in action and consider these electives for your child next year. ~Mr. Grant UPCOMING EVENTS Friday, March 2nd 1:20 p.m. - Early Release Friday, March 23rd 9:30 a.m. - PTA Board Meeting - WES - Conference Room (all are welcome!)
MULTI-CULTURAL NIGHT
SHARE YOUR CULTURE WITH WASHINGTON!
The culturally diverse learning community at Washington is one of our school’s greatest strengths. For the last three years, the PTA has celebrated some of the cultural groups represented in our school. This year, we would like to take a trip around the world in just one evening at an International Culture Night! Any family who has ties to a culture or nationality that they would like to share is invited to participate. Whether you belong to a large group, or if you are one of just a few people at Washington to represent your country, we would love for you to teach us about your culture! Whether you have only been in America a few years, or your family has been here for a few generations and celebrates your cultural identity, we want to learn from you! We are envisioning that each group or family who participates would set up a table in the cafeteria with a display that could include art, information, food to taste, music, native dress, etc. (If there are many families representing one group they will be able to work together to coordinate their display.) Students and families will be able to “travel” from country to country and get their Wizard Passport stamped as they learn about different cultural groups. If your children participate in any international dance or music groups and would like to perform, that would be WONDERFUL! Please let us know about it. In order for this event to be successful and to start planning, we need to hear from a substantial amount of interested families by MARCH 9th. If there isn’t enough interest, we cannot hold this event. Please detach and fill out the form below if you are interested in participating. LAST WEEK FOR WAKE UP AND READ BOOK DRIVE! From January 20th - March 3rd, WAKE Up and Read will collect new and gently-used books for children ages birth - 12. Many Wake County children have no books in their home and arrive for kindergarten without the knowledge and experiences they need to excel. Washington families can make a difference in our community just by donating books! Please clear your cluttered shelves of books your kids have outgrown, or bring in favorites of your own, so that we can help Wake County children grow up loving books. Look for the book collection bins at the Front Office – and please help us fill them! To find out more, contact Kara Goeres at kara.goeres@gmail.com. To learn more about WAKE Up and Read, visit www.wakeupandread.org, or check out Facebook.
NEEDED: MEDIA CENTER VOLUNTEERS Ms. Terashima would love several parent volunteers in the Media Center. She prefers a few parents who can come in for a couple of hours every week. This way, parents can get familiar with the way the library is set up and can accomplish sorting, shelving, shelf reading, and assist with other projects, like repairing books, covering books, creating displays, and so much more. Contact Media Center PTA Committee Chair, Kara Goeres at kara.goeres@gmail.com if interested!
NEEDED: TENNIS BALL DONATION WES Staff are in need of 100-300 tennis balls for student chairs to protect the tile floors. They are looking for a parent who might be connected with a park or country club that has tennis courts that might be willing to donate. Or, a parent who would be willing to call the YMCA or Raleigh Parks and Recreation to ask about donations. Contact Karen Pahl at kpahl@wcpss.net.

MULTI-CULTURAL NIGHT
SHARE YOUR CULTURE WITH WASHINGTON!
We are fortunate that our Washington Family is so culturally diverse! For several years, the PTA and Washington families have organized a cultural night to highlight different groups represented at our school. We have learned about India by celebrating Holi, we experienced the vibrant music, food, and art of Latin America, and we celebrated the vast cultural and historical contributions of African Americans. This year, we want to host a Multi-cultural Fair in April to celebrate everyone! If your family has a particular cultural background, we hope you will teach us by bringing traditional dress, art, music, food to taste, etc. More information on how you can participate is coming soon, but we need your help to plan this event!
THE PTA IS LOOKING FOR INTERESTED PARENTS TO HELP COORDINATE THIS EVENT IN APRIL. Please contact Amy Jones at docteachjones@me.com if you are interested, and/or click HERE to join the Cultural Night Hub in MemberHub!

Please email Coach K. at skichefski@wcpss.net or emilywking@gmail.com to volunteer. Learn more about Jump Rope for Heart here: http://american.heart.org/jump-hoops/
