Advocacy

Advocacy is a constitutional right and a proud American tradition. It’s the most important opportunity, after voting, that Americans have to be involved in their government. PTA is one of the nation’s oldest and most successful advocacy organizations. PTA has been an advocate for children since 1897 and has always been at the forefront in supporting laws that benefit children. One PTA purpose is to secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth.

PTA members can fulfill this mission and help brighten the future of every child!

One of Washington PTA's four core themes is Advocacy and Outreach.  As part of this theme, we want to provide information to Washington families about how to advocate for your student and for all students at Washington.  PTA serves to educate parents and students about issues impacting our school community.  PTA also strives to stay abreast of legislative issues that impact our students' education and school experience.

PTA is active in attending WCPSS Board Advisory Council Committee meetings for District 5. WCPSS is comprised of nine districts. A map showing the WCPSS districts can be found here. Our District 5 WCPSS School Board representative is Dr. Jim Martin. All school board members and their district schools can be found at http://www.wcpss.net/Page/5472. A profile of WCPSS School Board members can be found at http://eboard.eboardsolutions.com/AboutUs/AboutUs.aspx?S=920&TID=1#

PTA leadership receives annual training to stay informed about issues affecting Wake County schools. More information regarding statewide advocacy can be found on the North Carolina PTA website.

PTA also supports PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) trait development through outreach initiatives such as the "Coat Drive for Kindness" and "Food Drive for Cooperation."
