teacher & STAFF appreciation!

THANK YOU Washington GT Community!
Your involvement in this year's staff appreciation week has been simply incredible.  Thank you for so generously giving your words of appreciation, your time and your donations to make this week so special for our incomparable WES teachers and staff.  These contributions, in addition to your Shining Star donations, made this celebration possible!
  • WORDS: Students, parents, guardians, and staff members submitted 250 pieces of "Fan Mail" to let a teacher or staff member know how much they appreciate them.
  • FOOD: You contributed over $900 in donations to help provide goodies for the staff and teachers.
  • TIME:  25 parents + grandparents (plus quite a few students!) have devoted their time and talents to volunteer work.
  • SUPPLY DRIVE:  You have given over 100 items from the teacher's Amazon wish list, which will help them improve their classroom and student growth.

Thank you for showing your appreciation for our staff and teachers who give so much to our students all year long.

Meet our NEW Principal

My name is Catie Burnette and I am honored to be the Principal at Washington Gifted and Talented Magnet Elementary School. Upon graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a North Carolina Teaching Fellow, I taught first grade in rural Eastern North Carolina as part of the Teach for America corps. After getting married, I moved to Raleigh and continued my career in both first and second grade at Bugg Creative Arts and Science Magnet Elementary School. During my time at Bugg, I worked with beginning teachers, coached Girls on the Run, and worked as an A+ Fellow with the A+ Schools Program of NC. I was also selected as Teacher of the Year by my colleagues and was a semi-finalist for Wake County Schools during the 2015-16 school year.

Throughout my educational career, I have worked alongside many leaders who have shaped my values and beliefs. They helped me to also grow as a leader in and out of the classroom and encouraged me to further my education. I completed my Master's in School Administration at North Carolina State University and then became Assistant Principal at Hilburn Academy, WCPSS's only PreK-8th grade public school. In 2019, I was honored to be named WCPSS Assistant Principal of the Year. My husband, George, is an attorney that works with First Citizen's Bank as a Wealth Planning Specialist. We live with our dog, Lola, in downtown Raleigh and enjoy trying new restaurants, spending time with friends, and going to Atlantic Beach with our family.

Alumni: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University (HOUSE DIVIDED)
Gifts & Talents: music, relationships, creative writing, art
My Favorite Children's Book: Last Stop on Market Street
My Favorite Quote: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?' " Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Connect with the WizardPTA!

While we make an effort to keep this website up to date with news relevant to Washington families, one of the best ways for parents to connect with the WES PTA is to sign up for a MemberHub account at WashingtonGT.memberhub.com.

MemberHub is FREE and is the primary communication tool that our PTA uses. We use it to organize our PTA as we work to support WES teachers, students, and families. By signing up with MemberHub, you can ensure that you receive notifications about upcoming events, join the PTA, view a school directory, see a calendar of events, and find volunteer opportunities which will help Washington Elementary flourish for years to come.

WES PTA & Classroom Facebook Groups

Our PTA is doing our best to build connections during this unusual time. In addition to this website and MemberHub, families can also consider joining the WES PTA Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/wizardpta)

Also Grade-Level Facebook Groups, as described below...

Thanks to many volunteers to "admin," we have now set up Private Facebook Groups for each grade level's families to connect directly. These are a place to ask questions, seek advice, or spread good news with other parents at your same grade level.

To join the page for your child's grade, please click on the correct link below and answer the join questions to become a member of the page!

Please keep in mind, these pages are not managed or moderated by WES Faculty or the PTA Board - they are moderated by other parents of children in your child's classes. Please follow the ground rules to keep them a safe and respectful place. This is a unique year so we want to support each other in unique ways.

We Need You!

Our Washington PTA is only as good as the volunteers who generously donate their time and efforts to support our children's school. Whether you're new to Washington or just new to the PTA, we are eager to help find a way for you to contribute to your child's education.
